The user of said information does so at his or her own risk. Setting up Carbon Copy to run with the Complete Communicator modem should not be any more difficult than setting up any other modem software. With Carbon Copy, the key to successful operation is making sure that you don't have any COM port or IRQ conflicts and that your hardware settings of the modem agree with your software settings in Carbon Copy. Beyond that, Carbon Copy is like any other modem software. First check your hardware to be sure that you do not have a COM port or IRQ conflict. If you have another device other than your Complete Communicator modem set for the same COM port as The Complete Communicator modem, neither Carbon Copy nor your Complete Communicator modem will function properly. Carbon Copy will detect this during its diagnostic and deny you access to the program. Once you've determined that no COM port conflict exists, check your system to determine whether you have an IRQ conflict. COM ports use IRQ. Each COM port is assigned an IRQ for its use. COM1 is generally set for IRQ 4. COM2 is generally assigned IRQ3. Be sure that you do not have any other device using the IRQ of the COM port you've selected. NOTE that COM3 uses IRQ4 and COM4 uses IRQ3 by default. Be sure that they do not conflict with the Complete Communicator modem's COM1 or COM2 IRQ setting. To configure Carbon Copy to run with the Complete Communicator modem, change subdirectory location to that which contains your Carbon Copy software. Execute the command CCINSTAL. The first parameter deals with you COM ports. If the current COM port is not set to that of your Complete Communicator modem, press the A key until it is. Parameter B controls the baud rate. Your Complete Communicator modem operates at up to 2400 baud or if you have our MNP data modem, it will operate at the 9600 setting. Press the B key to make the appropriate selection. Parameter C allows you to select modem type. Press the C key to invoke Carbon Copy's list to modems. The Complete Communicator modem will most closely resemble the selection MNP Compatible. Move the highlight bar to it and press the ENTER key. The other settings in Carbon Copy will depend on your personal preference and are not critical to the operation of the Complete Communicator modem. Press the X key to save the current selection and exit to the DOS prompt. Carbon Copy is now ready to run with the Complete Communicator modem. If the Complete Communicator modem is the host, execute the command CC. If it is the caller, execute CCHELP. When dialing into the Complete Communicator modem through Carbon Copy, the caller needs to be aware of certain properties of the Complete Communicator. If CCBACK is not active on the computer at the time that Carbon Copy is activated, the Complete Communicator modem will respond like any other internal data modem. If CCBACK is to be active, it should be loaded and operational prior to loading Carbon Copy into resident memory through CC. The Complete Communicator will be first in line to respond to all incoming call and des so with a voice greeting regardless of how the Complete Communicator software is configured to answer the phone. On the caller's side, Carbon Copy abandons the attempt if it encounters a voice. Keeping this in mind, the caller needs to be aware that their dial string will include certain sequences of pauses and other than phone number digits to maneuver through to the Complete Communicator software to the modem mailbox. The specific sequence will be acquired through trial and error to determine the appropriate arrangement for you situation. The sample dial string above demonstrates the use of commas in the dial string to facilitate pausing prior to sending the tones for the modem mailbox. Example: 1-408-434-9701,,,,,,333 (333 refers to the modem mailbox) If the Complete Communicator modem fails to respond properly to Carbon Copy during program initialization, note the error message flashed by Carbon Copy. Most problems can generally be traced back to either COM port or IRQ conflict. A typical symptom of IRQ conflict does not necessarily generate an error message. The modem software dials out but does not seem to establish connection. This is not uncommon and easily resolved by tracking down the source of the conflict and removing it.
